This art style is named Art Deco or even known by many people as, Deco. This style first came out in France right after the 1st world war. It spread internationally through the years till the 40’s when the Second World War and people lost their interest. It’s eclectic style was basically using crafts inspirations mixed with machine age’s pictures, shapes and forms.
Deco’s aims were many, basically their designs aims were quite on the minimalistic side. They preferred symmetry, order and straight lines rather than curvilinear lines and asymmetrical shapes. The movement influences emerge from five main art movements which are; Cubism, Constructivism, Functionalism, Modernism, and Futurism. Their designs were highly simple and minimal and didn't involve much colour. For instance a poster which quite defines the style in the poster, “Don’t kill our wild life”.
Basically in this poster there are three main colours which are the; Yellow, Blue and Black. This clearly shows that Deco artists did not want to include too much colour in their work and preferred 3 to 5 main colours. Furthermore we see that although the poster is simplistic as possible, the work still looks realistic due to reason of the technique of perspective. Last and not least the text is placed at the bottom of the page and the artist is using a sans-serif font and is colouring it in White to fit the rest of the poster. In this poster the characteristics of the style are portrayed clearly and by simply analyzing the poster you can tell that this poster is a work done by a Deco artist.
From my point of view the style was and still is a great inspiration to contemporary artists. If you just put up the motifs of the style, the artists from the 20th Century are using similar techniques nowadays as the trend in the last century is to design in the most minimalistic way as possible. Deco also inspired movies. “The Great Gatsby” was a movie set in the same era. The designers of the movie made the poster look very similar to the Deco style. Having straight lines, not much colours and focusing on something less complex than they have seen before. The movie itself is composed of Deco Art influence, not just posters but even costumes and buildings. The movie literally portrays the Art Deco movement in the 20th Century for us to see. In the end people wanted something new after the war and they got Deco, which helped the wish of something new comes back to life and also to keep the style of the 20’s to live over the years as an explosion of something new and powerful.
