The style or movement originated in Italy back in the early 20th Century. The motifs of the style were quite simple. They wanted to let artists create an art concept which represents the future. These concepts usually included; Speed, violence and industrial objects such as the car, airplane and more. Although the style emerged in Italy the style spread around the globe, even arriving in Russia and The Great Britain. Their work usually offered a variety of different mediums from Graphic Design to stone sculptures.
The Italian Avant-guard Futurism emerged in Milan and was founded by the Italian Poet, Filippo Tomaso Marinetti. He came up with the “Futurist Manifesto” which was published on “Gazzetta dell’Emilia” in 1909. This release basically was a controversy and rejection to past movements. He wanted to give a celebration of speed, machinery, violence, youth and industry. This manifesto was basically a guide line to the futurism artists to get this celebration and embrace it on different mediums. The poet instructed them with poem like quotes to create innovative designs. In Graphic design this is seen even today. For instance if there was big news immediately parody artists start to portray their thoughts on paper or even on Newspaper, just to make a point and show there representation of the news. The same thing happened to the futurists. Futurists instead of news, they had the manifesto of Marinetti, which included imaginary poems, which the artists will read and create their own interpretation.
Furthermore in 1920’s a big number of futurists came to follow the fascism, included in the artists was Marinetti himself, the one who originally founded the movement. Marinetti was obsessed with the belief of fascism. Although he even sought to make the futurism the official state art movement of the fascism, not all of the artists in the movement agreed with his beliefs. Marinetti changed his life to involve himself into the fascism, he even moved from Milan to Rome, all around Italy, just to be in the Centre of everything happening at the moment. After some time Marinetti also was giving direction to political instructions for the movement, but again not all the artists agreed and in the end a number of futurists lest the movement.
Futurism was a huge inspiration to the predecessors who came after the futurism. Their style especially in Graphic Design was simplistic but effective and many movements were inspired. Not just from the characteristics of the movement, but also many were inspired from their way of putting art and giving a sense and direction, therefore giving more space for the audience to understand the style or movement.
