Born on May 8, 1920 Saul Bass is one of the most known graphic designers of the time. He made his name when creating; title sequences, film posters and corporate logos. Such logos include; the Bell System logo in 1969, the AT&T's globe logo in 1983 after the breakup of the Bell System. He also designed Continental Airlines' 1968 jet stream logo and United Airlines' 1974 tulip logo. These logos became some of the best known logos at the time.
Bass is most famous for his work on title sequences. If it wasn’t for him the title sequences of today wouldn’t have looked anything like we see them today. His first success was in “The man with the golden arm” in 1955. This title sequence was simply composed of vertical and horizontal lines. This sequence was an inspiration for the title sequences which followed throughout the years.
Moreover Saul bass became famous for his amazing title sequences he produced. He worked on several other movie title sequences including; Walk on the Wild Side (1962), North by Northwest (1959), Vertigo (1958) and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).
Meanwhile in the 60’s Bass was asked by several different directors and producers to visualized their ideas and creating not just title sequences but also actual animated movies. Moreover he not just created movies for other producers and directors, but also created movies himself and even won an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject on the film what man creates back in 1968. Bass also created movie posters. As his role as a Graphic designer he designed movie posters for a variety of different genres of movies including; Vertigo (1958), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), it's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
In my opinion Saul Bass was a revolutionary artist with incredible ideas which affected graphic designers how they use their techniques today. Even his opening sequence titles for movies were outstanding and compared to the opening titles of the time, Bass was the best in creating something outstanding from the other artists of the time.
